A grieving father must face an ancient evil to save a little girl with sea-green eyes; a young minister discovers there are things far worse than death; a young widow descends in to madness as she struggles to filter out the signal from the noise.
The eleven short stories in this collection will walk you to the edge of sanity and, hopefully, back again.

I don't usually read author introductions but I accidentally read this one. The humor in it had me instantly interested in reading a book written by this witty author. I was disappointed to see that the author doesn't put this wittiness into his book at all. It would have made this book an easy four star book.

I am going to go story by story and write short reviews for them...I just don't know how else to review this book.

Home by the Sea
Something about the last line gave me chills. That alone is enough to recommend this story. However, it did start out a little confusing.

Eustace
This is my favorite story because it is the most descriptive. I enjoyed reading and enjoyed the unconventional way the main character dealt with his problem.

Beggars Can't Be Choosers
The characters weren't likable at all. It kind of killed the ending (no pun intended) because you couldn't feel sorry for Bobby at all. Instead you just felt like he had it coming.

Disconnected
Truely a surprise ending that makes you feel sorry for the brother...well, for both of them actually. One of the better stories in the book.

A Simple Task
No offense to the author but this one should have been excluded from the book IMO. It was just an over done storyline that we have heard too many versions of to take seriously.

Exit Left
This one was pointless. It wasn't scary, it wasn't anything but lots of words about nothing. I hated this story and the ending. Honestly, had there been a definitive ending, I would probably feel differently but I strongly believe if you start a story you finish it. You do NOT leave it hanging in the middle of nowhere.

Signal to Noise
Not in the least bit scary but a very romantic underlining theme. I could see this short story easily becoming a novella should the author ever decide to revisit it.

Dark Legacy
Eh, interesting concept...would love to see this one as a novella or novel. Diving deeper into this one could be a lot of fun.

Gut Feeling
Too predictable. That is all I am saying.

Crawlspace
This one gave me a serious case of the heebeegeebee's! But, me and spiders have never gotten along ;) I would like to say that if I was the beta reader on this book, I would have recommended this story to be the last one in the book.

Terms and Conditions
Kind of a refreshing spin on an old storyline. Devil makes you an offer you can't refuse, yaddy, yaddy, yadda. But the way out of this was was pretty unique.

Overall, if you enjoy short campfire horror stories, this could be the book for you. If you like short stories you can read during your lunch break, this could be the one for you.

I like my books a little more developed and a lot longer :) but for a short, this wasn't bad at all.

Walking the Edge edition by Curt Jeffreys Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A well-written collection of short stories. While the overall themes and mood vary from story to story, each has a unique style that stands out from the others. Out of the collection, Eustace was my favorite. Something about the protagonists' worldview struck home with me. Overall, a fun afternoon read.
Walking the Edge is a great book. I usually don't like these types of stories but once I started reading I could not put it down. I had to find out what happened and I was never disappointed in the endings. Give this book a chance -- you'll be glad you did!
If you're looking for an entertaining read, this collection of short stories delivers. The author uses vivid descriptions to pull his readers into dark tales. Interesting plots, excellent grasp of literary devices, and suspense keep readers hooked until the bitter end. I look forward to reading more from Curt Jeffreys.
I have two words for the author Thank you. This is one of the best books of short stories I've read. Each book hooks you in with the first line and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I especially loved the first story about the baby with sea-green eyes and the story titled "Dark Legacy". The perfect amount of fantasy/science fiction combined with realism and dark humor. I will read anything Curt Jeffreys writes!
The first thing I noticed was the book cover picture. It is beautifully shot capturing fittingly the darkness & mystery of the book that one is about to read. All 11 stories in this book are superbly written - very original, imaginative and edgy! My favorite ones are 'Dark Legacy' and 'Crawlspace'. I enjoyed reading 'Walking The Edge'. Recommended!
Having written a number of short story collections myself I know how hard it is to sustain the momentum throughout the book. Each of these stories stand on their own and most really crackle with originality and imagination. I can sense Curt Jeffreys has been been honing his craft for quite some time. A highly entertaining read, though for those who have inadvertently walked through spider webs or been trapped in close quarters, you might want to steer around Crawlspace. Great work, well written, and professionally edited. Highly recommended.
Impelling short stories are sometimes like scenes in a movie where first impressions point directly to endings, where just enough details and character development are displayed to lead the reader onward to the resolution of a condition. Sometimes bad things happen to the innocent (“Crawlspace”), sometimes bad things happen to the central character who absolutely deserves his fate (“Exit Left”). Sometimes resolution is the expected or deserved, sometimes not so much (“Gut Feeling”-- who deserves a monster living in their intestines?) Regardless, bad things happen all the time. Complete with an abundant Ewww! Factor, this collection is overall effective and with common themes of death, insanity, horror, and all that is included with the writing style, a very good read. A good story is a good story, no matter the genre. The author’s attention to detail and turn of phrase and forthright plot structure indicate a mature writer at work. I enjoyed the collection overall, with the favorite being “Terms and Conditions”. Readers take note don’t read these stories just before you want to go to sleep!
